The Opel Zoo is located in the middle of the picturesque slopes of the Vordertaunus between Kronberg and Königstein. It presents around 1,600 animals of more than 230 species, predominantly from Africa, Asia and Europe, in a unique way. These include the only elephants in Hessen, giraffes, zebras, meerkats, red pandas, cheetahs, kangaroos, and many others.
Showing animals in social groups, in natural enclosures and, if possible, without visible borders between humans and animals, was the goal of the zoo's founder, Dr. hc Georg von Opel. The circular paths and nature trails in the 27-hectare zoo allow for an unobstructed view of the varied enclosures, which would otherwise only be possible with outdoor observations.
Another attraction is the generous facility for African penguins, where zoo visitors can directly observe the birds as they swim and dive through 8 cm thick glass.
