Museo Massó

The Massó Museum is located in the industrial buildings of the old Massó Hermanos canning company, near the port of Bueu, on the Pontevedra estuary and in the heart of the Morrazo peninsula. The idea of ​​creating a museum was suggested by Guillermo Marconi during his visit in 1928 to the Massó canning factory. At the family home he was surprised by the collection of navigation instruments, old documents and books, curious objects and models of historic ships. Following his advice, the Massó brothers built a plant on the oldest building of the factory, and in 1932 the Massó Museum was born.

Over time, the testimonies of the canning and whaling factories and the fishing activity completed the profile of the museum. In 1994, after the closure of the factory, the museum was acquired by the Xunta de Galicia. Today in the Massó Museum the maritime and industrial heritage coexists with the scholarly spirit of collecting from another era.

1. The conquest of the sea

The tour begins in the large room located on the first floor, where the exhibition revolves around the idea of ​​conquering the sea. It is dedicated to navigation and the disciplines, such as astronomy, geography and shipbuilding, which made its development and that of maritime trade possible. The speech is completed with references to the role developed in this area by maritime expeditions and privateering.

The room preserves the original museography of the 30s of the 20th century, constituting in itself a museum piece in which the valuable collection of old books on maritime and naval themes stands out, in which the incunabula, books printed in the early years of the printing press (1453-1500), deserve special attention.

2. The exploitation of the resources of the sea

The ground floor is dedicated to the exploitation of the resources of the sea. Part of a small section where archaeological materials from the salting factory and the amphora workshop from the Roman period (II-IV century) of the Roman site of Pescadoira are exhibited. The speech focuses on the industrial activity of the Massó family: its salting and canning factories and whaling, showing a collection unique in Spain.

3. Traditional boats

Within this same theme, you can visit the great hall of traditional boats, in which three of the most representative of the Pontevedra estuary are exposed: the dorna, the "polbeiro" boat and the great wreck of the last boat " xeiteira ".

4. Old salting

The space in which eighteen piles of an old salting room from the early nineteenth century, acquired by the Massó in 1900 to be used as an anchovy warehouse, will soon open to the public.

The museum facilities are not adapted for the circulation of people with reduced mobility.
