Description

Rationalist building from 1939, designed by Romualdo de Madariaga. It was conceived as the Bank of Spain until, in the mid-1980s, the Ministry of Economy and Finance decided to eliminate all branches that were not in provincial capitals, becoming part of the municipal patrimony.

The Casa das Artes, which began in 1990, has since become the main space for temporary municipal exhibitions. In this way, its rooms have hosted exhibitions of fine arts, architecture and photography, among other artistic disciplines, both contemporary Galician art and the most international artistic avant-garde of the twentieth century.

This wide range of exhibitions highlights one of the main objectives of the Casa das Artes, the general dissemination of culture in all its forms and manifestations.

On the other hand, the Casa das Artes hosts various municipal collections. It is the headquarters of the Laxeiro Foundation, the Pacheco Photographic Archive and the Torras Collection, which was born in 1998 as a result of a donation made by the Vigo artist Luis Torras to the city and which represents the best selection of the work developed by this artist throughout his career. Considered one of the most prominent figures in contemporary Galician art, Luis Torras shows in his collection, made up of 67 paintings, a predilection for landscapes and portraits, following a meticulous technique and a style that leads to a unique Fauvism, from a post-impressionism with Cubist roots.
